The Yeltsin Center is a not-for-profit organization that includes a museum, exhibition and discussion center. It promotes the development of civil society, democratic institutions, the rule of law, raises questions and provokes debate around issues such as democracy, freedom, and liberty of speech. Contemporary dance and theater platform is an important part of the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Center.
Historically Yekaterinburg is an industrial city. In the 1930’s it was largely formed around the giant Uralmash factory. There are other giant factories, but most of them are closed today or cutting production volumes and moving from the city center. The city is changing and growing very fast. Global practice to transform former factories into cultural spaces applies also to Yekaterinburg.
