Lonely in the Rain? Festival in Joensuu, Finland, 20.-25.10.2015.

September 11, 2015

The 13th edition of the Lonely in the Rain? -festival of contemporary dance, performance and improvisation brings a programme presenting topical currents of performing arts 20. - 25.10.2015 to Joensuu, Finland.

“The artistic profile of the festival focuses on works with political themes relevant to our time. Hence, after an emphasis on productions from Berlin last year, this year our international programme takes a look at contemporary dance from Russia. As many subcultures, also contemporary dance in Russia is in the hands of courageous artists, struggling to create bold contributions to the performing arts in an otherwise conservative atmosphere. On Saturday 24th October our Russian guest artists together with local dance makers hold a panel discussion about the current situations, opportunities and challenges in creating work Russia and Finland.” says the curator of the festival Tomi Paasonen.

Alongside the festival programme there is a workshop for audiences and interest groups at Ahjo Art Centre on Tuesday and Wednesday 20th and 21st October. From Thursday to Saturday the dance students of North Karelia College Outokumpu conquer the centre of Joensuu with an interactive intervention, leading audiences to the performance venues.

The selected productions are personal statements by the artists that in different ways reflect how an individual moves, performs and empathises in today’s world. The festival programme opens on Thursday 22nd October at Ahjo Art Centre with K&C Kekäläinen & Companys’s Diva Vulva, which unravels how Finland in 2015 lives a capitalistic spectacle that penetrates and modifies the body with pleasure, money and images. The main partner of the festival since four years, The Joensuu City Theatre presents Friday 23rd October on it’s main stage the Australian choreographer Lucy Guerin’s piece I’m Trying To Tell You, which demonstrates miscommunications and translations of Finnish and English with the confusion between the languages of dance and theatre acting. Later that night on the small stage Andreas Constantinou from Denmark dissects the appropriation of gender roles in ReDoing GENDER 1,5 in a very animalistic way.

On Saturday 24th the festival present two pearls from Russia: the sisters Olga and Elena Bodova’s sensitive Memory of Heart is a meditative memory landscape, whereas Zonk’a’s duet from Jekaterininburg is Anna Shchekleina’s and Aleksandr Frolov’s autobiographical culmination between past, future and presence. On the main stage of Joensuu City Theatre, Ari Numminen sends local dancers on a collision course with romantic music while asking what is the relationship between patriotism and dance? On Sunday 25th we invite the audience to a performative exhibition at Botania, Joensuu’s in-door botanical garden, which questions our concepts of nature. Does nature belong in a museum? And can we exhibit humans in them as living objects? The festival’s last performance takes place at Ahjo at 6pm with Dialogue Dance Company from Kostroma, Russia with their production of Neurasthenia that depicts unexpected bodily reactions to real life in Russia and its restrictive laws that the makers of the piece live in midst of.

“In this way Lonely in the Rain? festival continues its quest to examine the development of contemporary dance as an interdisciplinary art form which shapes are born as a sign of our times and which expressions are formulated by the pressure of living in this world and fuelled by current circumstances.” tells Paasonen.
